The Griswald is a functional work of art that has been handcrafted over the course of a year. Including the loft, it is 160 sq. ft and is fully furnished. The exterior is clad with Canadian red cedar shingles and cedar tongue and groove planking, sealed for longevity. The interior walls and ceilings are made of pine tongue and groove with dimensions inspired by sacred geometry. ¾ inch solid oak hardwood floor. The exterior is illuminated with rope lighting while the interior has a hidden LED light cove within the center beam.
Hundreds of “maple leaf” shingles were hand cut and painted to give The Griswald it’s tree canopy roof. They were installed back to front like the scales of a fish to be the most wind resistant. There’s even a bird house in the window dormer!
Featuring a wood fired hot tub made from a steel trough with room for two, detailed with beautiful live edge butternut wood. Water is circulated and heated through a copper coil loop surrounding the custom made wood stove. The stove can be used during winter months to heat The Griswald.
German Rottweiler not included.
The Griswald is set up for 120 volt electrical service with convenient outlets throughout. An efficient 4 gallon per minute propane on demand hot water heater serves both interior plumbing and exterior showers. Hookups are a standard extension cord and garden hose.
The kitchen features a grouted glass tile backsplash, LED work light, propane gas range oven, a larger two door mini fridge, custom solid blue pine cabinetry and oak countertop. The deep wheelbarrow sink equipped with homemade copper faucet appears to be pushed through the wall, with the outside serving as a planter box.
The Griswald would be a lucrative investment as it was built with the intention of being a vacation rental, such as an AirBnB or VRBO. It can comfortably accommodate a family of five with a full-size mattress in the loft, a comfy futon, and the stowaway hammock. With plenty of storage it could make a wonderful tiny home as well. It is not designed to be traveling all about as an RV.
The van cab has essentially been turned into an outhouse accessed by a sealed insulated door under the loft. The passenger seat has been removed and replaced with a whimsical composting toilet. All the components can be disassembled for easy clean up.
The Griswald is new construction built upon a solid foundation. The ‘77 Ford Camper Special has a rebuilt 400 big block engine that purrs like a tiger. New tires. Clear North Carolina title in hand. The spray foam insulated arched and domed architecture combined with structural insulated panels (SIPs) and ZIP system sheathing, makes for high thermal efficiency and the strongest possible form.
